We can all identify with the hermit crab: He just wants to find a nice, cozy home where he can hide away from the world at a moment's notice.

Thanks to Japanese artist Aki Inomata, some lucky hermit crabs will now be able to hide away in beautifully designed homes, all created via a 3D-printer. Among the shells' designs are New York City's skyline, a Parisian apartment, and even a series of windmills.

Inomata used a CT scan of the interior of hermit crab shells in order to get a proper sense of proportion for the crabs' future homes. Based on those images, Inomata modified and slightly enlarged the designs via 3D-modeling software, with city skylines jutting out from the shells. Read more...
