The 19th amendment granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920 — seventy-two years after the idea had first been proposed.

During those years, women protested, rallied and marched. Women began to take on work typically done by men at the start of World War I. As wartime workers, women put pressure on then-President Woodrow Wilson to see them as political equals. Eventually, they gained his support.
