"It's all about the audience becoming a visual entity of the show and not just a username and a piece of copy," Mike Scogin, vice president of MTV mobile, explained to Mashable.
The VMAs red carpet begins at 6 p.m. ET and the awards show airs live at 9 p.m. ET from Brooklyn's Barclays Center with performances from Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake (likely with 'N Sync), Bruno Mars and Drake.
